Sunspot Removal in Plymouth
with the Alexandrite Laser
The Alexandrite laser is remarkable for removing the appearance of dark spots caused by freckles or sun damage. It is a 755nm wavelength laser that is attracted to the darkened pigment and lifts the surface pigment. The pigment will get darker initially and then it will get a “coffee ground” appearance, this is called micro-crusting. Over the next 7-14 days, the darkened pigment will gradually flake away revealing lessened pigment or no dark spot at all.
The treatment only takes a couple of minutes. The skin will feel hot during treatment and there will be minimal pain, similar to a prickly heat feel while the laser is pulsing. The treated area will be pink to red and feel warm to hot right after treatment. There is no real downtime with this laser treatment. However, due to being pink/red and the spots getting darker initially it is advised to have it done at least 2-3 weeks before a special event to give ample time for the pigment to flake away.
Right after treatment people can go right back to their normal routine and wear makeup and cover up to conceal the dark spots. Contraindications are antibiotics, retinol, and tanning. Immediately following treatment avoid intense heat like saunas, hot tubs, and hot yoga.
No pigmentation treatment is permanent. As the cause of hyperpigmentation occurred many years prior it is deep within our dermis – the deepest layers of our skin. Any laser treatment or topical treatment (like a peel) can only remove the surface layers. However, the surface layers are what we see and care about presenting to the world. So, what this means is the treatment will need to be repeated, especially after UV exposure. With UV exposure, the latent pigment deeper within the skin will again come to the surface.
The good news is that with the advancement in technology and availability, the cost of treatment has come down significantly. So this can be thought of as a seasonal “Fall/Winter Skin Cleanup”. Come in once or twice per year to clear away your pigment after summer at an unbelievably affordable cost.
